Carl Olsson

Carl Olsson has a PhD in human geography. His ongoing research concerns the contemporary history of geographical thought with a focus on what people who work with geographical knowledge actually do. His dissertation discussed the consequences of natural scientific perspective in cultural geography, especially in relation to debates about non-representational knowledge (that is, knowledge that is not meant to function by representing something) and ideas about Earth as an astronomical object.

The premise for Olsson's research is that geographical knowledge not only concerns spatial relationships but also constitutes such a relationship. When we think about ourselves in our environment, we impact our relationship to our environment and move the boundaries for what we can do. Geographical thought of all types has direct consequences also for its practitioners who can sometimes risk getting lost through their ideational worlds. Borders figure in an expanded sense of constraint and delimitation.

Olsson's research can be read in journals like GeoHumanities, cultural geographies and Geografiska Annaler B. Moreover, he often collaborates internationally with visual artists and actively contributes to the development of continental theory through essays published by Urbanomic, ŠUM, Cosmos & History and 邊界_RG.

More information can be found on Olsson's page in Lund University's Research Portal and on his personal website.
