Fredrik Nilsson is a Professor of Ethnology at the Department of  Culture, History and Philosophy at Åbo Akademi University. Fredrik Nilsson was head of the Centre for Oresund Region Studies 2012-2017.

Nilsson has been both editor and author in several of the book series' volumes, the latest being number 35 - Spritsmuggling på Östersjön: En kulturhistorisk studie av nätverk i tillblivelse (with Johan A. Lundin, 2015). Fredik Nilsson mainly conducts cultural-analytical research on borders and transnational processes, and has studied discourses on refugee camps, political movements and criminal networks in the Oresund region. Alongside this, Nilsson has, among other things, researched how popular music creates space for new performative practices, how masculine identities are negotiated on the basis of overweight and how gender is negotiated in religious contexts in modern society. The research is linked by an interest in political and cultural processes and identity formation.
